Culture as a competitive advantage, not just a feel-good bonus.

In this series, we’ve explored vision, alignment, and the systems that support change. This month, we’re turning our attention to what lies beneath it all: culture.

If this is your first newsletter in this series, welcome. We’ve recently redesigned our communication efforts to help firm leaders better understand the future we’re working to design and build. We invite you to help us shape that future for our industry. We’re so glad you’re here.

Culture isn’t just how it feels to work together—it’s the behaviors, assumptions, and norms that shape how your team communicates, collaborates, and makes decisions. It influences how people show up during times of uncertainty and how aligned they feel in the work they do. And yet, culture often gets overlooked in strategic conversations.

At Apostrophe Consulting, we see culture as a competitive advantage, not just a feel-good bonus. When shaped intentionally and reinforced consistently, culture fuels teams forward, including any change you’re working toward. It’s an essential investment in building a healthy and vibrant studio culture.

Strengthening Your Culture

Start by naming what your culture is today, not just what you aspire to. The key is to be honest. What behaviors are rewarded? What norms go unspoken? Where do people feel most supported—or stuck?

This month, take 10 minutes to reflect on this question:
What’s one thing that might be holding your culture back?

Write it down. Share it with your leadership team. Try a small experiment in shifting the culture—and see what it shifts.

Looking Ahead

Culture creates the container for strategy, but leadership brings it to life. Next month, we’ll look at how to support and develop the leaders inside your firm so they can steward change from the inside out.

This summer, we’re slow-launching our new podcast experience, designed to share more stories on leadership. We’re currently looking for sponsors. Stay tuned!

From the Field

In the last two months, we partnered with amazing teams across the US to advance meaningful change inside their firms. At two different retreats, we had the opportunity to center conversations on culture, connection, and change.

At QKA in Santa Rosa, we facilitated a design charrette to explore talent development. Through hands-on exercises and structured dialogue, we looked at how to intentionally design for culture, training, and growth, creating a shared dialogue for staff at every level.

At Environmental Works, a nonprofit community design center founded in Seattle in the 1970s, we reflected on the firm’s rich legacy and imagined what’s next. The team surfaced what makes their culture distinct and began naming the shifts they want to make to stay rooted in their values and prepared for the future.

Environmental Works Retreat on Bainbridge Island, May 2025.
A meaningful day of reflection, connection, and visioning for what’s next.

These retreats weren’t just strategic exercises—they were human ones. When people feel seen, heard, and engaged, meaningful change starts to take shape. Culture is one of the most important ingredients in our strategy toolkit, and we are committed to nurturing it with purpose.

Fall Retreats

We have a few limited spots left for fall retreats. If your firm is planning for growth, navigating leadership transition, or looking to strengthen culture and alignment, a facilitated retreat can help your team get clear on what’s next—and how to get there together. Let’s design a session that helps your team move forward with clarity, purpose, and momentum.
